Magazines:Initially I wanted to stray away from music themed magazines and media in order to diversify my uni portfolio- however most of the magazines I saw were centred around cultures or topics I had very little to comment on with illustrations. However I found two magazines while roaming Bristol that piqued my interest. The two physical copies I bought were "Beautiful Bizarre" and "Wire" Bizarre (issue 33) features beautiful artworks from a variety of cultures and artists with paragraphs upon paragraphs of behind the scenes interviews and stories of the processes and inspirations. All of which is a pleasure to read and stare at. One entry in particular that I'm fond of is Adrian Cox's "the boy with kaleidoscope eyes" (no affiliation to the Beatles' Lucy in the sky with diamonds"! This glimpse into another artists mind and methods of creativity laid out in such an interesting composition with details so personal makes for a captivating entry to this magazine for me. Finding the deeper functions and details in someone's work is why I would go to read magazines surrounding my interests or perhaps to learn more about new cultures, music, art etc. Another point to make- having a large double page spread with a mysterious but beautiful painting is what enticed me to this particular segment; each artist has their own unique introductory pages making the magazine (as it says on the cover) beautifully bizarre. Moving onto "WIRE" a musician/artist I listen to occasionally featured (so of course I had to buy it). Many of the reasons as to why I was intrigued are shared with my previous comment on immersing yourself deeper into art. Weyes Blood created an album named "Titanic Rising" in 2019; I fell in love with the album for longs like "andromeda" and "wild time" however, after reading the segment I was made aware of live theatrical performances of the album along with some of the underlying concerns of technology and climate change in the day to day lives of people. Magazine Covers:Later I moved to Pinterest to broaden my collection of random magazine covers I found interesting- mostly focusing on art/design, illustration and music- here are some examples: One aspect of these covers that I enjoy is the main article is very "in your face", impossible to ignore. Noticeably, the "rolling stone" covers features phenomenal photographs of artists dotted with text promoting the other articles while still sticking with an overall theme or vibe.
For "Vogue" I really appreciate the little illustrations added onto a photograph- it makes the cover a little more whimsical and exciting! As for the "JOJO magazine", for someone who has been following the series the small "easter eggs" on the cover are like a shot of nostalgia- considering the series has been running from the 80s to now. It may be worth adding that the art style along with the colour scheme makes the cover explode with personality and that's exactly why I'm so fond of it!
